The Kuranda Train and Skyrail Self-Drive tours are excellent for those with cars.
Kuranda Scenic Railway
In the 1880s, the construction of the Kuranda Railway began. The railway was needed for Miners from the west to get back to civilisation.
Construction began in 1886 to build 15 handmade tunnels and 37 bridges along 75.1 kilometres.
During this time, many construction workers lost their lives.
Construction workers removed three million cubic metres of earth, quite a feat for those times. Tourists began using the railway to visit Kuranda in the 1930s.
On your journey through the majestic mountain range and the oldest rainforest on the planet, you will discover all of this and more. Stop off at the Barron Falls lookout for the perfect photo opportunity. To see the falls thundering after some rain is very impressive.
Kuranda Markets
The markets in Kuranda are renowned all over the world. The Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets and the Heritage Markets are the two different market locations found within the Village in the Rainforest. The stalls sell handcrafted items, including jewellery, leather and wood goods, and Aboriginal artefacts. The vendors are happy to discuss their trade, and shipping items to other countries is not a problem. It’s also possible to enjoy the entertainment provided by roving buskers.
It is not difficult to locate the Kuranda markets because there is convenient signage all over the village. The world’s best opals are on display in Kuranda. Next, head to Australis Gallery for a fantastic collection of Australian art.
