It sits at 16 degrees south latitude — well within the tropics, and the most northerly major city in Queensland. The Coral Sea lies immediately to the east, the Great Barrier Reef begins less than an hour offshore by fast boat, and the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area presses close to the city on virtually every side.
The city occupies a narrow coastal plain between Trinity Inlet and the mountainous hinterland of the Great Dividing Range, which rises dramatically just west of the urban area and is covered in the lush green vegetation of the Wet Tropics. The Atherton Tablelands sit atop these ranges, accessible within an hour’s drive, and the contrast between the tropical coast and the cool highland plateau is one of the most distinctive geographical features of the Cairns region. The journey from Sydney takes approximately 3 hours, making it an accessible destination from any Australian capital. International flights also connect Cairns directly to Asia, New Zealand, and the Pacific, reflecting the city’s role as a global destination for reef and rainforest tourism.
The Cairns airport is located just 7 kilometres from the city centre — unusually close for a major Australian airport — and the journey from arrival to Esplanade hotel room takes less than 15 minutes.

Orientation for a Visitor Without a Car
Knowing where Cairns is matters less than knowing how far you can go once you arrive. There is a published boundary that answers that.
TransLink, the Queensland Government body responsible for public transport, defines the Cairns network as the Cairns Regional Council area, stretching from Palm Cove in the north, south to Gordonvale, west to Redlynch, and taking in Cairns City and the surrounding suburbs (TransLink service area, checked 3 August 2026). Inside that line you can travel by public bus, currently at a 50 cent flat fare. Outside it — Port Douglas and the Daintree to the north, Kuranda and the Atherton Tablelands up the range, Babinda and the southern waterfalls — you will need a tour, a coach, a hire car, or the railway and cableway to Kuranda.
The other useful boundary is the taxi district. Cairns Airport describes the regulated Cairns taxi district as running from Ellis Beach in the north south to Wrights Creek, Edmonton (Cairns Airport, Taxis, checked 3 August 2026) — slightly wider than the bus network at its northern end.
