Cairns Markets at a Glance

Cairns has regular markets across the city and region, including Rusty’s Market for fresh produce and the nightly Night Markets. This guide lists the markets and when they run.

“A Cairns market morning is one of those experiences that turns into a ritual — the mango stall you can’t pass, the coffee you queue for, the stall holders who remember your name by the second weekend.”

Cairns Markets — The Living Pulse of the Tropical Community

Cairns has a thriving market culture — a series of regular markets throughout the city and region that collectively offer an excellent window into the community, the produce, the art and the food that makes Far North Queensland genuinely distinctive. Whether you spend a morning at Rusty’s loading up on tropical fruit and fresh vegetables, browse the craft stalls at the Tanks Markets at Edge Hill, or simply wander through the Cairns Night Markets in the evening, the markets are an essential part of any Cairns visit.

Rusty’s Market — The Essential Cairns Experience

Rusty’s Market in the Cairns CBD, between Grafton and Sheridan Streets, is the market that Cairns residents live by — a sprawling covered farmers’ market that has traded since 1975 and now opens Friday and Saturday from 5am to 4pm and Sunday from 5am to 3pm, where fresh tropical produce, Asian herbs and vegetables, baked goods, honey, plants and a rotating collection of ready-to-eat food stalls are sold by growers and producers from across Far North Queensland. The fruit stalls alone are worth the visit: pineapples the size of footballs, boxes of Bowen mangoes in season, exotic fruits that most Australians have never seen, all at prices that will make you wonder why you ever paid city prices for fruit. The atmosphere is genuinely local, genuinely good-natured, and a perfect Saturday morning activity before a day on the reef.

Cairns Night Markets

The Cairns Night Markets, on The Esplanade in the CBD, open daily from around 5pm to 11pm, offering a mix of souvenir shopping, artisan crafts, clothing, Asian street food, massage and the pleasant bustle of a tropical city doing its evening thing. Less authentically local than Rusty’s but excellent for gifts, cheap meals and a warm evening wander through air-conditioned retail pleasure.

Tanks Markets and Other Markets

The Tanks Markets on Collins Avenue at Edge Hill, held on the last Sunday of each month from April to November, are free to enter and are a favourite with local residents — combining arts, crafts, plants, food and live music in the heritage setting of the wartime fuel tanks. It is worth planning a weekend visit around if your dates allow.

Markets Across the Cairns Region

Cairns has three markets that run week in, week out, but the wider region has a whole calendar of monthly and weekly markets that most visitors never hear about. If your dates line up with one of them, it is one of the easiest ways to spend a morning among locals rather than among other travellers.

Market Where Generally held
Rustys Market Cairns CBD, between Grafton and Sheridan Streets Friday and Saturday 5am to 4pm, Sunday 5am to 3pm
Cairns Night Markets The Esplanade, Cairns CBD Daily, from around 5pm
Tanks Markets Collins Avenue, Edge Hill Last Sunday of the month, April to November. Free entry
The Pier Markets The Pier, Pierpoint Road, Cairns Third Sunday of the month
Palm Cove Markets Williams Esplanade, Palm Cove First Sunday of the month, from around 8am
Smithfield community markets Smithfield Shopping Centre Second Saturday of the month
Gordonvale Cottage Markets Norman Park, Gordonvale First Saturday of the month
Yungaburra Markets Main Street, Yungaburra, Atherton Tablelands Fourth Saturday of the month, January to November
Kuranda markets Kuranda village Thursday to Sunday
Port Douglas Markets Anzac Park, Port Douglas Sunday mornings
Mossman Markets Central Mossman Saturday mornings

Market days move for public holidays, weather and the occasional special event. Cairns Regional Council publishes a community markets calendar and the current Tanks Markets dates, and it is the most reliable place to check before you plan a morning around one: Cairns Regional Council markets.

One larger date worth knowing about is Carnival on Collins, a free Father’s Day event on Collins Avenue at Edge Hill run by the Tanks Arts Centre as part of the Cairns Festival, with a few hundred stalls and entertainment through the day.

How Long Do You Need at a Cairns Market?

  • Rustys — one to two hours, and best in the first hours after opening.
  • Cairns Night Markets — thirty to sixty minutes, or longer if you are eating.
  • Tanks Markets — a relaxed two hours, and easy to combine with the Botanic Gardens next door.
  • A monthly regional market such as Palm Cove or Yungaburra — treat it as a half day once you include the drive.

The planning mistake to avoid is assuming the markets run every day. Only the Night Markets do. If a market morning matters to you, put it in the calendar the moment you know your dates.

Local Knowledge

The suggestions below are local knowledge and personal recommendations rather than verified facts. Opening times, seasons and conditions change, so please treat them as a friendly starting point and check current details before you set out.

  • Take a bag or a small backpack. Rustys is a working produce market rather than a souvenir market, and the fruit adds up quickly.
  • Cash is still handy at smaller regional markets, even though most stallholders now take cards.
  • Tanks Markets sit beside the Cairns Botanic Gardens, so a market morning and a shaded garden walk make a very easy pairing.
  • If you are staying in the northern beaches, the Palm Cove market morning is a gentler outing than driving into the city.
  • Mornings are cooler and calmer. By the middle of the day most open air markets in the tropics have thinned out for good reason.
