Cairns Events at a Glance
Cairns has a busy calendar of festivals, sporting events, cultural celebrations and community gatherings throughout the year. This guide lists the main events and when they happen.
“A city’s events tell you what it values, what it celebrates, and what brings its people together — and Cairns, it turns out, celebrates rather well.”
Cairns Events — What’s On in the Tropics
Cairns punches well above its size when it comes to events — a calendar of festivals, sporting events, cultural celebrations and community gatherings that reflect the energy and diversity of a city that knows how to enjoy itself. The dry season (June through October) is the peak events period, when the weather is perfect for outdoor celebrations and visitor numbers swell the audience for major attractions. But Cairns events run year-round, from the Cairns Festival in late August and early September to endurance sport in the cooler months and the tropical magic of Christmas markets in December.
Major Annual Events
The Cairns Festival, generally held from late August into the first days of September, is the city’s flagship arts and culture event — a multi-week programme of outdoor performances, visual arts exhibitions, food events and community celebrations that transforms the city into a creative hub. Ironman Cairns attracts elite athletes and passionate age-group competitors from around the world for one of Australia’s most prestigious triathlon events. The Cairns Show (the local agricultural show) is a beloved annual tradition with rides, livestock competitions, food stalls and community spirit. Race Day at the Cairns Amateurs and Tropical Racing Carnival dresses the city in its finest and fills every restaurant and bar for a weekend of genuine Queensland celebration.
Food and Market Events
Rusty’s Market (every Friday to Sunday) is a year-round institution. The Tanks Markets at Edge Hill on the last Sunday of each month combines art, music, crafts and excellent food in a beautiful heritage setting. The Cairns Tropical Market Trail visits different market locations throughout the year. The Salt House Food and Wine Festival brings the city’s best culinary talent together in the summer season.
Planning Around Events
Major events in Cairns can affect accommodation availability and prices significantly — particularly Ironman, the Cairns Festival opening weekend and Race Day. If your travel dates coincide with a major event, book accommodation well in advance. If you’re flexible with dates, timing a visit to coincide with the Cairns Festival or a big race weekend adds an extra dimension of energy and celebration to your holiday.
The Cairns Festival, and Why It Matters for Food
The Cairns Festival is run by Cairns Regional Council and turns the Esplanade and the Tanks Arts Centre precinct into the centre of the city for around ten days. A large part of the programme is free, which makes it one of the most generous events of its kind in Australia.
Two dates inside the festival are worth knowing if food and markets interest you. Tanks Twilight Markets runs at the Tanks Arts Centre precinct during the festival, and Carnival on Collins takes over Collins Avenue at Edge Hill on Father’s Day with a few hundred market stalls. Both are free to attend.
Dates move each year. The Council publishes the full programme, and it is the only place worth checking: Cairns Festival programme.
Planning Around Events
| If you are | What to know |
|---|---|
| Visiting in the dry season, roughly June to October | This is the busiest events period. Accommodation and restaurants book out further ahead |
| Visiting during the Cairns Festival | Book restaurants earlier than you normally would, and expect the Esplanade to be busy in the evenings |
| Visiting in the wet season | Fewer large outdoor events, but a quieter and often more relaxed city |
| Hoping to build a trip around one event | Confirm the date with the organiser before booking flights. Annual event dates move |
An event should be a bonus rather than the thing a trip depends on. If your dates do not line up with anything in particular, Cairns still has markets every weekend and the Night Markets every evening.
