Lake Morris at a Glance

Lake Morris is Cairns’ main water supply reservoir, high in the ranges above the city and reached by a steep, winding road. It offers a rainforest walk and quiet views that most visitors never see.

“High above Cairns, the reservoir rests like a mirror — still, vast, and quietly extraordinary.”

Cairns’ Hidden Highland Lake and the Walk That Reveals It

Most visitors to Cairns never see Lake Morris. Tucked into the ranges above the city, accessible via a steep and winding road, this large reservoir is both the city’s primary water supply and one of its most unexpected natural escapes. At 330 metres above sea level, the air is cooler, the views are sweeping, and the sense of distance from the tropical bustle below is immediate and welcome.

The lake was formed in the 1950s when the Copperlode Dam was constructed across Freshwater Creek, and over the decades the surrounding slopes have become rich with regrowth rainforest and open eucalypt woodland. Today it is a favourite spot for walkers, cyclists, and those who simply come to sit by the water and breathe. The road to the dam is popular with cyclists training on the Cairns hills — a challenging climb rewarded by extraordinary views back across the city, Trinity Inlet, and out to the Coral Sea.

The area around Lake Morris supports a wide variety of birdlife, including the magnificent Victoria’s Riflebird, which can sometimes be heard performing its extraordinary display call from the treetops. Platypus have been spotted in the creek systems feeding the reservoir, and the forested edges provide habitat for possums, wallabies, and the full chorus of tropical insects at dusk.

Cairns Regional Council states that swimming and boating are not permitted here — this is the city’s drinking-water reservoir — but it is a wonderful picnic and photography destination — especially at golden hour when the water turns amber and the surrounding hills go soft and dark. It is one of those places that feels like a secret, and that is part of its extraordinary charm.

A Hot Getaways destination. Where Care is Our Compass.

Before You Drive Up: What the Council Publishes

Lake Morris is Cairns’ drinking-water reservoir, and Cairns Regional Council is the authority for it. Everything below is what the Council states, checked on 3 August 2026.

  • Opening hours: the recreation area is open to visitors from 8am to 6pm, seven days a week. This matters more than it sounds, because the drive up takes a while and the gate is not negotiable.
  • Swimming and boating are not permitted. This is a water supply reservoir, not a swimming hole. If you want to cool off on this side of the city, Crystal Cascades is the obvious alternative.
  • Facilities: barbecues, picnic facilities and accessible toilets near the dam.
  • The road: the 16 kilometre access road from Reservoir Road climbs steadily along the face of the Whitfield Range, with lookout points along the way. The Council notes that Lake Morris Road can be closed at short notice.

Because a closure can be called on the day, check with Cairns Regional Council for current conditions before you set out rather than relying on this page. We would rather link you to the live source than reprint a notice that may already have changed.

Where To Go Next

Lake Morris pairs naturally with the rest of the high country and the creeks below it.

Travel Kindly

At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Cairns, we gently ask you to:

  • Protect the reef — wear reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on the coral.
  • Respect the wildlife — admire the birds, turtles and rainforest creatures from a distance, and take your rubbish home with you.
  • Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful place thrive.
  • Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
  • Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.

Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
